Defining the Myth

Coined by theologian and activist Walter Wink, the Myth of Redemptive Violence is the archetypal myth of imperial cultures from ancient times to the present, tracing directly back to the Babylonian creation myth, the Enuma Elish, which served to bolster and perpetuate the Domination System. This system comprises the overarching network of the world's powers, as wielded through institutions, bureaucracies, laws, and regulations that exert power over ordinary people. It is behind the “unjust economic relations, oppressive political relations, biased race relations, patriarchal gender relations, hierarchical power relations, and the use of violence to maintain them all.”[129]

Although the Domination System has taken on various forms throughout thousands of years, from ancient Mesopotamia to the Roman Empire, in forms as seemingly far-ranging as fascism, communism, and market capitalism, it has maintained its basic hierarchical, unjust, and oppressive structure, utilizing violence and exploitation as its means of maintenance and expansion.
